Frequently Asked Questions
How will my insurance cover my home enteral nutrition costs?
We will verify your benefits with your insurance company before you begin service. We want you to have a clear understanding of your benefits and any out of pocket expenses prior to your start of care and initial delivery.
Will a nurse come to my home to show me how to administer my enteral nutrition?
Before you begin on home enteral therapy, you will receive education and training on how to administer your own or your family member's enteral feeding. Depending on any skilled needs you may have and insurance coverage, you may have home health nursing set up in the home, and may continue to receive training on enteral feeding administration. If you do not have home health set up in the home, we will help to ensure that you and your caregiver are able to administer your nutrition therapy independently.
How will I receive my enteral nutrition?
Generally, you will receive one small shipment on your first day of home enteral feeding. There will be a subsequent delivery from a courier or shipping partner within the next few days. It is our goal that each monthly shipment of formula and/or supplies arrive to you in plenty of time to ensure you are never without what you need for your enteral therapy. One of our Nutrition Care Coordinators will call you each month to schedule your next shipment, as well as to assess your therapy and supply needs; you will not receive automatic deliveries or excessive supplies.
What if I have questions or need support if I do not have nursing in the home?
BioScrip clinicians are here to assist you for the duration of your home nutrition therapy. Depending on your specific therapy, a nurse may be assigned to make routine visits for line care or labs. Throughout the course of your nutrition therapy, our dietitians, nurses and pharmacies will ensure all of your concerns are addressed quickly.
What additional support does BioScrip provide to a nutrition support consumer?
If the hospital's schedule of enteral and parenteral feeding isn't working with your lifestyle at home, we will work with your doctor to develop a plan better suited to your needs. We are here to teach you about nutrition products, practices, and formulas and to help you make informed decisions about your healthcare. Our nutrition specialists are trained to help identify nutritional deficiencies and complications. We can partner with you in your decision-making and help you evaluate the effectiveness of your current nutrition regimen.
Do you work with other agencies involved in my care?
Yes. If you have nurses from another agency helping to care for you or are seen by dietitians through outside agencies or clinics, we will coordinate your care together. We can also help your doctor coordinate any other services you may need in your home such as physical therapy or home health aide assistance.
How do you communicate with my doctor?
BioScrip is committed to providing patient-focused care. Our patients help guide clinical decisions, but we also communicate with the healthcare team to discuss clinically relevant issues.
What happens if I need to be away from home during my therapy?
BioScrip clinicians can assist you in preparing for travel, whether by car, plane, train or cruise-liner. Contacting your local branch as early as possible in your planning will ensure we can successfully coordinate travel arrangements.
What do I do in the case of an emergency?
If you have any life-threatening problem, call 911 first, or go to your closest emergency room. For situations that are not life threatening, call your BioScrip pharmacy; a nurse, pharmacist, and dietitian are there for you 24 hours a day. Please call us if you are having any problems with your enteral access, or if you have any symptoms related to your nutrition therapy. After regular business hours, our answering service will relay your message to our on-call specialists, who will promptly return your call. Because we may not be able to get your specific type of formula and supply to you until the next 1-2 business days, it is very important that you contact us about 3-5 days before running out of your formula and/or supplies, so that you are not ever in a situation where you are without the essentials to administer your enteral therapy.
